According to Abhay Ashtekar, Director of the Institute of Gravitational Physics and Geometry at the Pennsylvania State University, the Big Bang theory of cosmology will need to be replaced by the Big Bounce. Loop quantum cosmology (LQC) is a derivative of loop quantum gravity (LQG), which successfully combines Einstein’s General Theory of Relavitity based theory of gravitation with quantam mechanics. A result: classical cosmology, in which an originating big bang ends, ultimately, with a collapse of the universe into its originating singularity – an infinitely dense, microscopic point – is replaced by LQC, in which the the universe bounces back due to a repellant force that emerges as matter approaches the Planck density. If so, our current universe may be just one in an already existing cycle of expansions and contractions that go on without end.
Talk about déjà vu all over again. Again. Again.
